Planning the Perfect Disney Trip with the Grandparents

A few months ago we took a big celebratory family Disney trip. All 12 of us went - ages 2 to 70! We made some of the most magical memories. Our resident family grinch (Dad) looked over on our first park day on Kilimanjaro Safari and said “I’m so glad we did this. It’s magical seeing this through the eyes of the kids.” And that right there is why we recommend Disney with the grandparents. My sisters and I all have magical memories of Disney with our Mamaw and Papaw when we were little that we treasure, and we wanted to ensure the littles had the same experience with their grandparents.

However, planning a Disney trip that caters to family members of all ages can be a slight challenge. From toddlers to grandparents, there's something for everyone at Disney. Here are our top tips for making your multi-generational trip seamless and magical:

1. PLAN AHEAD

Make sure to make your dining and special experience reservations (e.g., Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and Savi's Lightsabers) 60 days out. Download and familiarize yourself with the My Disney Experience app to manage your plans efficiently. If you need to utilize the Disney Accessibility Service (DAS), you will need to apply 30 days out to ensure smooth accommodations for your family members with special needs.

2. CONSIDER STAYING OFF-SITE WITH A LARGE GROUP

For large families, we typically recommend staying off-site in a spacious AirBnB. This allows everyone to stay together, enjoy communal spaces, and save on hotel costs. Driving to the parks each day gives you flexibility, and each family can tailor their schedule without feeling pressured to arrive at rope drop.

3. EMBRACE A RELAXED SCHEDULE

This is your vacation, so don’t feel like you have to rope drop (arriving at the park before it opens). Start your days at a pace that suits everyone in your family, and focus on enjoying the moments rather than rushing from attraction to attraction.

4. PLAN ONE TABLE SERVICE MEAL EACH DAY

To give the littles and grandparents time to rest in air conditioning during the heat of the day, plan one table service meal in the park each day. This break can be a lifesaver, providing a cool and comfortable spot to recharge and enjoy a delicious meal.

5. UTILIZE CHILD SWAP

If you have little ones who can’t go on certain rides, take advantage of the Child Swap service. This allows one adult to wait with the non-rider while the rest of the party enjoys the attraction, then switch without waiting in line again. It ensures everyone gets a chance to experience the rides they love.

6. SCHEDULE (A LITTLE) DOWNTIME

While I am notorious for trying to go to the parks as many days as I can, it does help to ensure there's downtime in your itinerary for rest and relaxation, especially for the little ones and seniors. Whether it’s a midday break back at the AirBnB or taking in a few of the shows at the parks, these moments help everyone stay refreshed and happy.

7. USE MOBILE ORDERING

Disney’s mobile ordering service is a game-changer. Skip the lines and order food and drinks via the My Disney Experience app. This saves time and allows you to find a comfortable spot to enjoy your meal without the hassle of standing in line.

8. MAKE USE OF MEMORY MAKER

Capture your magical moments with Disney’s PhotoPass service by purchasing Memory Maker. It’s especially handy for large groups, ensuring everyone is in the picture. Plus, you can relive your memories with high-quality photos that last a lifetime.

With these tips, you can create a magical and (mostly) stress-free Disney experience for your entire family. Remember, the most important part is to enjoy the time together and make lasting memories!
